Artichokes split on the road with Mesa

Scottsdale softball and Mesa split a doubleheader at MCC.

Game 1: Mesa 6 Scottsdale 5

The Artichokes jumped out early with three runs in the first and added single runs in the third and sixth, but Mesa answered quickly and stayed within striking distance before pushing across two runs in the sixth to take the lead for good.

Scottsdale finished with 10 hits, led by Bella Gomez, who went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs. Kadence Braden and Hailey Estrella each added two hits, with Estrella driving in a run.

Kailyn Montoya (9-6) took the loss for SCC, allowing six runs (five earned) on 10 hits over 6.0 innings while striking out four.

Game 2: Scottsdale 7 Mesa 5

After two scoreless frames, Scottsdale broke the game open with seven runs in the third and never trailed the rest of the way. Mesa chipped away with one run in the fifth, two in the sixth, and two more in the seventh, but couldn't complete the comeback.

The Artichokes (20-21, 16-18) tallied 10 hits, led by Jazmyn Martinez, who went 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Jacee Larson added two doubles and drove in two runs, while Bella Gomez contributed two hits and an RBI.

Tyler Gordanier (8-11) earned the win, going the distance and allowing five runs (two earned) on 13 hits with three strikeouts.

SCC will host Yavapai in a non-conference doubleheader on Friday, April 17. Game one will begin at 12 p.m.
