Volleyball Has Tough Start in Playoffs

GLENDALE, Ariz.—Playoffs got off to a rough start last night as the Scottsdale volleyball team fell just short to Phoenix College in a tight five sets (25-22, 15-25, 23-25, 25-21, 8-15) Thursday at Glendale Community College.

Scottsdale finished the regular season 19-6 heading into Tuesday's playoff game. The Artichokes had beaten the Bears in both of this season's previous match-ups.

The Artichokes took an early lead of 15-9 during the first game. They were able to claim the first game after a kill by sophomore, Victoria Fajardo, to win the first game 25-22.

In the second game, Phoenix College took charge early on building up to a nine-point lead on Scottsdale. This created a tough hole for the Artichokes.

The Artichokes held the lead for most of the third game, coming close to claiming the game at 23-18. But Phoenix College fought back, to win the game 25-23.

As the fourth game went underway, it was a back and forth battle between Scottsdale and Phoenix. Eventually a solo block by sophomore, Madison Clement, followed by a kill by Fajardo, gave Scottsdale the 25-21 win.

During the fifth and final game, Phoenix College had most of the control. Scottsdale stayed with them, but eventually fell 8-15.

Playoffs are a double-elimination tournament, and Scottsdale will take on Pima Community College at 11 a.m., Friday, at the tournament host site, Glendale Community College. If they win, the Lady 'Chokes will play the loser of the Glendale Community College versus Phoenix College match-up at 7 p.m.
